  14. PNG is supposed to become a new standard for pictures
  15. on the Web, it also has several advantages over the GIF
  16. format.
  17.  
  18. GIF features retained in PNG include:
  19.  
  20. - Indexed-color images of up to 256 colors.
  21. - Streamability: files can be read and written
  22.   serially, thus allowing the file format to be used as a communications
  23.   protocol for on-the-fly generation and display of images.
  24. - Progressive display: a suitably prepared image file can be
  25.   displayed as it is received over a communications link,
  26.   yielding a low-resolution image very quickly
  27.   followed by gradual improvement of detail.
  28. - Transparency: portions of the image can be marked as transparent,
  29.   creating the effect of a non-rectangular image.
  30. - Ancillary information: textual comments and other data can be
  31.   stored within the image file.
  32. - Complete hardware and platform independence.
  33. - Effective, 100% lossless compression.

  35. Important new features of PNG, not available in GIF, include:

  37. - Truecolor images of up to 48 bits per pixel.
  38. - Grayscale images of up to 16 bits per pixel.
  39. - Full alpha channel (general transparency masks).
  40. - Image gamma information, which supports automatic display of images
  41.   with correct brightness/contrast regardless of the machines used to
  42.   originate and display the image.
  43. - Reliable, straightforward detection of file corruption.
  44. - Faster initial presentation in progressive display mode.

  46. PNG is designed to be:

  48. - Simple and portable: developers should be able to implement PNG
  49.   easily.
  50. - Legally unencumbered: to the best knowledge of the PNG
  51.   authors, no algorithms under legal challenge are used.  (Some
  52.   considerable effort has been spent to verify this.)
  53. - Well compressed: both indexed-color and truecolor images are
  54.   compressed as effectively as in any other widely used lossless format,
  55.   and in most cases more effectively.
  56. - Interchangeable: any standard-conforming PNG decoder must read
  57.   all conforming PNG files.
  58. - Flexible: the format allows for future extensions and
  59.   private add-ons, without compromising interchangeability of basic PNG.
  60. - Robust: the design supports full file integrity checking as well
  61.   as simple, quick detection of common transmission errors.
